The mini hydropower industry was revived in the early 1990’s with the CEB announcing its intention to buy all power generated from independent renewable energy power producers.

The industry has witnessed phenomenal growth in the past 15 years with 88 projects currently in operation with an installed capacity of 182 MW. The Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) and the Ministry of Power and Energy have targeted a further capacity of 350 MW of mini hydropower to be installed in the country by 2015.
